Back Home — China

Summer 2026

Some trips you plan; this one you simply return to. A few weeks back home in China with my family, and the itinerary wrote itself: slow mornings in the neighborhood garden — there's a little farm in it, the air is fresh, and everything smells like things growing — lazy afternoons around Meibei Lake, all willows, bridges, and pagodas, and a full-time eating schedule. Liangpi, roujiamo, yangrou paomo, plus a Cantonese detour of chicken pot and dim sum. No summits, no border stamps. Just home — which, it turns out, is a destination too.

The garden five minutes from home — a bench, a lawn, mountains on the horizon. My official spot for doing absolutely nothing.

The lotus pond in the neighborhood garden. Fresh air with a hint of green.

The red path through the trees — my walking-and-thinking route.
Back Home — China photo 4 china 4
The neighborhood farm, quietly growing somebody's dinner. I love living next to things that grow.

Meibei Lake — stone lions on guard, a pagoda supervising from a distance.

The boardwalk across the water lilies. Every step is a new postcard.

Willows, a stone bridge, a pavilion over the water — the classical Chinese landscape checklist, fully satisfied.

The pagoda peeking through the willows, playing hard to get.

Same pagoda, new frame. This park makes everyone feel like a photographer.

The Spotted-Bamboo Pavilion (斑竹亭), living up to its name.

Liangpi — cold noodles slicked with chili oil and vinegar. One bite and I'm in high school again.

A stone pot of fish under a red tide of chili. It looks dangerous. It is. Worth it.

Braised beef tripe — glossy, tender, and completely unapologetic.
Back Home — China photo 14 china 14
Roujiamo, the original burger — slow-stewed pork in a crisp flatbread. Held correctly, eaten immediately.
Back Home — China photo 15 china 15
Fresh-sliced beef hotpot. The plates empty faster than the pot can boil.
Back Home — China photo 16 china 16
A spicy shrimp pot from a shop that literally crowns itself the King of Live Shrimp. No objections at this table.
Back Home — China photo 17 china 17
Hulatang, the peppery breakfast soup that wakes you up more honestly than coffee ever could.

Chemian (扯面) — hand-pulled wide noodles in tomato soup, chewy in exactly the way noodles dream of being.
Back Home — China photo 19 china 19
Cantonese congee with youtiao — silk in a bowl, crunch on the side.
Back Home — China photo 20 china 20
The chicken pot arrives already bubbling, like it has somewhere to be.
Back Home — China photo 21 china 21
Noodles buried under a landslide of diced pork. Zero notes.
Back Home — China photo 22 china 22
Yangrou paomo (羊肉泡馍) — flatbread soaked in lamb soup. Xi'an's most patient dish, and its most rewarding.

Cold dressed vegetables — the crunchy diplomat keeping the peace between all that spice.
