Beyond Research

field notes from the parts of life that don’t fit in a BibTeX entry

There’s a version of me that proves theorems and runs experiments — and then there’s this page. Beyond research, I’m someone who simply loves being alive: chasing a sunrise up a volcano, learning things badly until I learn them well, trading a quiet weekend for a new trail, a new city, a new dish, a new friend. New experiences are how I keep life colorful, and my camera is how I keep the evidence. Every pin on the map below comes straight from the photos: a place I have actually stood.

Trips

Alaska

March 2025

Alaska in March is a world with the color turned down and the volume turned up. We rode the old Alaska Railroad north, watched sea lions bicker over a sunny rock near Seward, and stepped inside a glacier hole so blue it didn't look real. In North Pole the reindeer never stopped eating; on the Dalton Highway we drove until the map said Arctic Circle. And when the aurora finally spilled green over Fairbanks, nobody remembered the cold. Denali saw us off with a proper blizzard — and the softest snow I've ever fallen into.

Zion & Grand Canyon

March 2026

A March loop through Utah and Arizona: red rock, cold rivers, and a lot of staring. In Zion we waded the river until our legs went numb and laughed the whole way. In Page, Lower Antelope Canyon turned out to be a sculpture that light re-carves every hour, and Horseshoe Bend showed us the river's slowest, grandest U-turn. Then the Grand Canyon itself — no photo prepares you for the moment the ground simply stops. Wild, enormous, and completely indifferent to us. I loved it.

Guatemala

May 2026

Guatemala doesn't do quiet. Tuk-tuks buzz around Lake Atitlán, markets spill into the streets, and a wedding can simply take over a corner in Antigua — everyone approves. We drifted between lakeside towns, found hippie yoga in San Marcos and an artist's studio I left three paintings richer, then climbed Acatenango for seven relentless hours. That night Fuego erupted over and over, like the mountain had something to say. At sunrise, above the clouds, it stopped feeling like a view and started feeling like a blessing.

Postcards

Some places I pass through once; some keep pulling me back — and all of them leave something behind. There's no grand itinerary here, just views that made me pull over, look up, or take the long way on purpose. Postcards from wherever the road decided to go.

Small moments

The best photos are never the planned ones. A cat that decides to trust you, a finish line you weren't sure about, a dish too good to eat right away, a friend mid-laugh — life keeps handing out these small gifts, and I try to catch as many as I can. This wall is where I keep them.
